Hey Everyone, This is Travis from Frontline Entertainment. Today we will be de-bunking a common paintball myth or misconception. One of the most annoying things in paintball is having a mask that fogs up on you. Many people buy a mask because it is labelled “fog resistant” or “anti-fog”. This may seem like a good investment but it usually isn’t.
Antifog masks simply have a coating over them. After a few hits, a few cleanings or when they get wet this coating will wear off and your mask will begin to fog up. Players spend good money on masks they expect not to fog up and are constantly let down. This can ruin your day or even paintball in general for you.
What you want to buy is a mask that is labelled “THERMAL”. A mask usually fogs up when there is a difference of temperature between the outside of the mask and inside.A thermal lens is a dual pane lens that has a layer of foam between the 2 panes. This helps to keep the difference in temperature to a minimum and prevents your mask from fogging up. A good thermal mask will almost never fog up and some of the higher end masks should never fog.
Another thing that can cause a mask to fog up is breathing. When you are playing paintball you are usually sweating and breathing heavy. You want to find a mask that creates a good seal around your eyes and nose to prevent your breath from getting up inside of the lens. Another good option is to wear a shemagh or bandana over your head or mouth.
There are a few more tricks to preventing a mask from fogging up as well. If you have a cheaper single pane lens you can use shampoo, dish detergent, or hand soap and rub over the lens. Leave it for a minute or 2 then wipe it off. This is not full proof but will significantly help prevent the lens from fogging.
I hope everyone was able to find at least one helpful tip. If you have any questions or want to try on some masks for yourself you can drop in anytime to our proshop and let one of our staff help you make the best choice for you!
